Nicandra physaloides- grow in pots or in ground

I was told to put it straight into the ground as it has long roots but other instructions say put it into pots and plant outside when frosts have gone- it's supposed to grow in Alaska- there can be a very short period when there isn't frost there

Well it may survive in Alaska, but it don't survive the winter here in sunny Shropshire. It does survive as cold hardy seed though and regrows on its own in Spring. To be on the safe side I keep some seed which is sown in Spring and planted out in the soil after the last frost. Well, that is after the supposed last frost. We did have frost in July one year!
Have grown a few in pots in the greenhouse to keep the old whitefly away too.
