I have one of these plants and it has dropped its leaves in the last week or so. Is this normal?

Just keep it in a sheltered position and it will be fine. You should see the buds where next years leaves will emerge.

All the Japanese Acers drop their leaves in autumn and, as Kildermorie says, you should be able to see the buds that will become next years leaves.

Yes its deciduous and hopefully will grow new ones next spring
