What's this please?

Hello everyone, as it was the first fine day we've had for ages I thought I would make the most of it and do some digging and I came across this. Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks in advance.

At first glance it loks like a Dahlia tuber or it could be Bryony.

It looks like potatoes to me, do the tubers smell 'potatoey'?

I would like to know as well > Simply grow it,thats what i would do,you might be susprised what develops, without seeing more growth from it ,its hard to guess, usually if its a tuber or bulb like that its got to be something nice is"nt it ;) x p.

Doctor Bob is right, it looks just like a dahlia tuber. If you look carefully at the top you can see the characteristic reddish shoots where the stems are starting to grow. Why not pop it in a pot and enjoy some nice late dahlias flowering in the autumn?

Thanks to all. It's back in the ground and hopefully I'll be able to post a picture of a lovely dahlia in the not too distant future. Thanks again.

I guess we'll all look very silly if something entirely different comes up! Good luck. Just bought some well grown dahlia plants for 1 euro each in a car boot sale, so hopefully will be joining you with some good blooms in late summer!
