does anyone know the best time to prune back perennial salvias such as "Hot Lips". Mine has been magnificent this year and is still in full flower but I'n not sure when or how much pruning it requires.

I tend not to prune mine until the mid spring. The longer growth protects the lower stem from hard frosts. In spring I give it a trim back to a strong set of shoots. Then some of the prunnings I strike them as cuttings. some take others dont.
