What is the best way to treat a wooden barrel before planting

I have recently purchased, direct from a cooperage, a couple of untreated half barrels. What do I need to do to them before planting.

i would drill some drainage and put a plant friendly preservative inside and out.then get some polythene perhaps black and put some drainage in that.staple it just above the soil line and it will stop the rot a bit.i would empty it every couple of years and repaint it to keep the rot at bay.wood does very badly next to damp soil but you can keep it at bay to a degree
