what is this plant?

hello,
i've got this plant in my garden, i have no idea what it is! it looks really overgrown and leggy (probably because i have ignored it for the last five years!)
if anyone can help it would be great, and any added care tips would be a bonus :) i've never seen it flowering, but it has little buds on it, like there are flowers in there somewhere.

Looks very much like a white lilac (syringa alba) to me.Yet seems to be growing as a hedge or in one wont appreciate being over crowded which is why getting tall and leggy.Searching for light to develop.Once flowering finished would trim back to shape and re plant in more open aspect.Lovely in full bloom with nice fragrance.

thanks for the advice! my garden is quite shady, so maybe thats why its growing so tall. its not in a hedge, but there were a lot of plants and weeds crowding round the base, and there was a rose bush growing through it. i've cut all that away now, so hopefully it'll start looking good!
