I look after a garden which is used by a local church for summer events, usually held in June and July. Too many of the perennial plants I've got there flower too late in the season to be useful. I've got a good variety of hardy geraniums, dianthus, primulas etc., but would appreciate any recommendations for plants which would give good value from June onwards. Smallish shrubs would also be acceptable. Anybody got any favourites?
Thanks.

How about Heucheras they always look good

Yes Heucheras, nasturtiums will seed themselves and come each year ( the trailing ones are good fun), Japanese anemones are good right now and so are dahlias. Lots of lower growing single-flowered dwarf dahlias ; you dont have to dig them up and store the tubers although I know that is recommended ; you can try putting a mound of compost over them in winter for protection. Worth a try.

Irises are coming good in June such as the Siberian cultivars and the rhizomatomous (spelling?) ones. In our garden we have asters from June onwards and the first of the lilies ie Lilium pyrenaicum. Geum.

Pink or carnations, alliums, alstromeria, campanulas, eryngium, fuchsia, daphnie, potentilla, buddleia, lilac. If you type 'plants that flower in June' into Google search you will find lots of lists and suggestions.

Sorry to muscle in, but could you tell us some fuchsias that flower in June MG? Mine are all later and it would be great to have some earlier ones.

Hi Steragram

Given that we have an alpine and woodland garden we don't have fuchsias in general. But everything I've read says they flower in June... We used to grow Fuchsia procumbens to take to the SRGC Discussion Weekend in fruit but that eventually gave up the ghost.

Just checked Crocus and they claim Fuchsia Mrs Popple flowers from June to September... I suspect it depends on which ones you actually have.

I think the time for fuchsias flowering stated by suppliers is down to the location of the plants, infact at sea level lower than me, fuchsias are in flower weeks before mine. Mine never come in before mid August.
I have a lot of plants that are in flower in June and July, things like Aqualegias, Delphiniums, Foxgloves, primula varieties, potentilla (perennial) And some varieties of verbascum oriental poppies and not forgetting some Campanula and polemonium.

We need Hywel he,s the fuchia........ and cactus man!

My hardy fuschia has been in the front border from well before we moved here. 26 years ago......its like mrs popple but probably a hedging fuschia..... if it gets really knocked back in the winter and has to shoot from the base its always later than warmer winters, even so its usually flowering mid june/july

Thanks to everyone one who offered suggestions. Lots of plant ideas for me to play with. Interesting points about variations in flowerin times, depending on situation. I'm on the Solway Coast, where MOST winters are mild and wet - or they were until the deep winters of the two years before the last one! The down side to the mildness is the south-westerly winds, which can come as gales in autumn and spring. That can set things back considerably and, in some cases, actually kill them.
