They are the red lily beetle. Squash them immediately they are a disaster for lillies.Inspect lillies daily you will notice notches where they have eaten the leaves.

Agreed. And don't be alarmed if they squeek when you pick them up! Don't know what part of the UK you're in, but these are becoming progressively more prevalent - I hadn't seen one either until about 3 years ago - now I see them every year and in increasing numbers :-(

I have just killed 8 ,they are now copulating so you can get 2 for the price of 1!! I inspect everyday for them especially if the weather is sunny.

If you knock them off the plants, they always fall upside down and their underside is brown so you can't see them against the soil

Spotted my first one today, the wretched thing heard me coming and dived off the lily and disappeared onto the soil. Now I did not know that lily beetles were intelligent! You learn something every day.

I picked the beetles off of my lillies and sprayed them with sunflower oil, they die almost immediately. You can also spray the plants as well, especially when there are young grubs on them. It's very effective. If you want to use a pesticide IMIDACLOPRID is also very effective.
