It's a general rule of thumb that rhubarb is not pulled in its first year. Just leave the ones that are there now to die down naturally, but continue to feed and water while it is still growing. Mulch well in winter to protect the crown from frost, and next year resist temptation and pull no more than half of the stems that emerge. By the third year, the plant will have matured but it is always a good idea to leave some sticks for the crown.
