I dont really know the best way to look after this shrub. At the moment iits in a shaded area that gets a little sun. Its seems to be doing quite well as its alreay about thigh high on me. As its a newbie does it need any extra feed etc?or pruning to make it fuller?

cheers peeps

Buddlaeias don't really need alot of attention, but if you can get hold of some brick dust and gently fork it in around the roots, it will enjoy that. You can trim back any straggly bits for the sake of appearance, but the main prune is done in February, early March at the latest. Then cut it hard back to about 1 ft above the ground. This will encourage that year's new shoots. Buddlaeias flower on new wood, so if you prune it this year you will lose your flowers. All you need to do this year is remember the three D's. Dead, Dying and Diseased. That's all you need to remove, and this little rule applies to most flowering shrubs.

Prune instructions are as BBbee says above. I'll just add, though, that Buddleia flowers much better in sun than in shade, and oddly, the butterflies are drawn to it IF the flowers are in sun, but not so much if they're in shade. It's a tough old plant, doesn't need much food, grows on railway sidings if it gets a chance, all by itself.
