Updating old stone-dust garden path
Asked on 2 Jun, 2008 1 reply
Our stone dust garden path was professionally laid 14 years ago. The ground underneath is pretty much solid rock. We now have weeds that are impossible to keep ahead of (we prefer not to use a herbicide) and so are planning to top up the path with another inch or two of stone dust.
Is this apt to solve our weed problem?
Should we lay weed cloth first or will the stone dust wash off it?
We plan to rent a compactor. Should the stone dust be wet or dry when being compacted?

Hi I have a Hibiscus shrub it is approximately eight years old and six feet tall. The Hibiscus is healthy and has good leaf coverage.
The problem is the flowers have never opened.
The flower buds form each year in abundance on the shrub but do not open.
I would love to see the flowers open as i am told that they are very special.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

I planted some plant seeds in a seed tray 3 weeks ago. Nothing has appeared yet. Do you know how long it should be before I see any shoots appearing? (I am a real beginner with this, so please bear with me). The seeds were a gift from someone who visited New Zealand, so they are native plants from over there. They are:Mount Cook Lily (ranunculus lyallii) and Chatham Island Forget-Me-Not Blue (kopukapuka myosotidium hortensia)Hope you can help!

leaves are disappearing from my allegheny serviceberry tree
Asked on 2 Jun, 2008 0 replies
I have a small allegheny serviceberry tree that I planted in spring of 2007. It did fine last year, but this year the leaves are disappearing. I can't tell what is eating them. How do I tell if the damage is due to an insect or a deer?

I put a mature pothos in a coco lined hanging planter and it fared badly (did fine in a plastic pot), lost maybe a third to half of it's leaves. I like the way hanging plants look in them but now I'm hesitant to use them with any plants I really care about--afraid I'll lose them. Are there any tricks to successfully using these things, any type of prepping you have to do before putting your plants in, etc? Any info on the best way to use coco-lined planters for indoor or outdoor plants would be appreciated. Thank you. --Pam in Mass

I've had a pothos, good size, for about three years now. It always did well whether I ignored it or paid it attention(mostly ignored it). I decided in late winter this year to repot it into a coco lined hanging planter. After about a month some leaves started dropping off. Then it started happening a lot, they'd turn yellow or brown first then drop. I put it back into a plastic pot and hung it where it had always been hanging, watered/fertilized it the same as before (water about once a week, fertilizer about once every three or four months if I could remember), and hoped it would recover. It's been back in the plastic pot for maybe 6 or 8 weeks now and the leaves are dropping off as much as ever, it's starting to look very straggly and humble, it's not recovering at all, it looks bad. I'm fixing to throw it out but before I do I thought I'd ask and see if anyone knows what the problem might be and how I can remedy it. Anybody have similar experiences? (I blame the coco planter, it was doing fine until I put it in that but I don't know how to help my pothos now.) Thanks for considering my question, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot ---Pam in Mass

I have a small, square wooden flower box. I want to plant an ornamental grass in the center, Heather and Chocolate Chip (basically ground covers) in the front, and Autumn Joy and Tall Garden Phlox in the back. I know this is unusual and would not leave the standard spread space suggested for these perennials. My question is: what will happen if I do this with the hope of having the same plants regrow in the box next year? What will happen by the end of next summer in such cramped quarters? Bottom line, is this a dumb idea? I can get the specific names of the plants if required. I appreciate any comments.
