Incredible twig caterpillar

Dear All,

Look what’s been eating my apple tree! Please blow up the photo as big as you can and find the 3 inch long caterpillar! It surely has adapted specifically to feed on apple trees, just look at the little bumps like the tree bark!! No idea about the species though.

Best wishes from Japan,

Peter

I just learned it myself Grandmage, So simple, I also like to use the Home and end button on
the top right of keyboard, especially when the blogs are really long :)

Thanks! I was non the wiser about zooming in! The caterpillar is about three inches, exactly in the middle of the picture. Its back legs are clamped to the leading branch, the rest comes out diagonally and it is munching on a leaf whilst the body remains dead still. The head is shaped as two buds, and the sides exactly like the tree bark. While zooming in helps a bit using control +, the resolution does change. Its actually a high res image so in a normal photo programme, zooming in is really effective. Best, ptarotuos

I can see it now, How amazing is that, i looked at least 3 times and couldn't see it..Have you left it on the tree Peter?

Hi Youngdaisy,

Yes, it was just so clever and wonderful that despite the damage it might do - and has done - I just thought it had earned a reprieve. It's a shame you can't see the quality image file as when you use a standard photo viewer and zoom in it is tremedously clear showing everything. I really think it must be especially adapted for apple trees as the skin is identical to the bark. I've of course seen various loopers and things imitating twigs before in the Uk, but usually small and also good at blending in, are not a patch on this because it munches on the leaves with only a tiny movement to avoid detection by birds and the parasitic wasps that aboud here (in fact everything abounds). I just wonder whether if I put it n a different tree and left it, whether it would be able to change its skin colour and texture? Like an octopus. That would I think make etomological news! regards, ptarotuos. I'm just about to upload a butterfly image too.

Thank you for sharing your destructive little crittur with us Ptaro. I am another who has learned about the blowing up process and I did not know about home and end either so thank you YD. To blow it up I right clicked on the photo and then clicked copy in the drop down menu and pasted it in to my Microsoft Office Picture Manager. By using edit and crop and resize to 300% I could see all the details. Fascinating. I also copied it in to microsoft word. Clicked it and the corner tabs come up and you can pull it out to extend the photo without distorting it too much.

Well...that's one clever caterpillar! You sure get monster bugs in Japan, Ptaro!! Caterpillars and hornets...at least the caterpillar won't chase and squirt you with poison as the giant hornet will (was just reading about those giant hornets via google search and watched a video....gruesome critters!).
