Down the garden path

I posted a picture a couple of weeks ago after selling off the bottom of our garden. A new 10ft high fence had been put up, as per hubbys instruction across our 80ft wide garden. I couldn’t get used to it at first in fact I hated it but couldn’t think what to do???

Should I paint it? I asked. – Well if you do don’t choose a bright colour was the reply. Then Drc came to my aid. Have a look at garden gates and garden mirrors, I was advised. So after a few hours of being inspired, this is one part of the fence now transformed. There was an existing path there anyway, which now leads to my secret garden….

This is how the garden looked before….

This is how the lefthand side of the fence looks now….

How did that dog get into that photo!!!
I managed to get a bargain price gate from ebay and after a careful drive home… this was the result. I then decided to grow climbing roses around as a frame. ~So quick trip to gc, half price climbing red roses and voila. The beds either side of the gate had other ideas – the ground was rock hard. So had to go for a raised bed to one side and admit defeat. To finish off I found a rather nice plant holder that looks a bit like a window in the garage. Ive had it for ages but was never quite sure where to put it. So all in all I think it looks alot better now. Just a bit more digging along the rest of that fence and I’m playing about with some mirrors on the other side, because its a bit shady there and I’m hoping it will reflect some light back in. But its a good start. Thanks everyone who made comments, for your help. I’ll finish with a few more photos, and then onto the next project….if my back will take it!

Wow I love this, well done you. Great colour for the fence and what you have done so transforms that area, giving it a real interest and the paving flags across the bottom make it look as if you can see light under the gate. I hope you feel better about losing some of your garden now?

Yes D,
I feel alot better about it now. I was a bit down about it and didnt know what to do - just brood !! I have great plans now and I'm getting to grips with my hubbys electric saw and drill. So more projects on the go. I'm glad you noticed that little bit of light under the gate, it does make it look more real. I'm now on the look out for a big ring handle and long hinges to finish the gate off. Someone posted a lovely pic of an old gate at Penshurst Place, which was a great inspiration. Hope you are recovering now after your hospital stay.

Looks very attractive indeed. Make sure it is not covered by too many climbers or shrubs to obstruct the view.
The fences on all sides of my garden are completed covered with ivy. I personally prefer it that way as the fences were very old with many see through gaps. It gives me a 100 per cent privacy and stay green all year round.
