Lost mine too :-(, a lovely plant, the flowers look like silk, lovely picture Dd.

Thank you ladies, does this mean mine will go the same way? can you tell me why you all lost your plants please.......

30 Aug, 2012

They are not hardy Dd . . . mine was in an unheated greenhouse. Maybe if yours is in your garden room(?) it will be fine.

Its a gorgeous colour isnt it. I have never grown this.

Oh, this is so beautiful! I used to have one in my conservatory, but it got really straggly and horrid and had to go. I wonder if I should try again and prune it better next time...I just love the blue flowers!

30 Aug, 2012

I left mine outside as it was quite large and heavy to bring in! Hence the winter of 2011 got it.

30 Aug, 2012

Sheila it is in the garden room and it will stay there......Amy I do hope so because it is such a beautiful colour....Karen they do say to prune it to keep it from getting too sprawly.
Cinders a first for us too. GM it will have to stay inside with the rest of the tropicals.....

Yes Dd. best place.

30 Aug, 2012

That's on my shopping list then!

Is it typically very difficult to bloom this shrub, where you live?

The large shrubs and trees here have been in full bloom since summer. It typically blooms heavily from summer - winter.

2 Sep, 2012

Delonix - typically it can be tricky. But to bloom it in this summer DD has done brilliantly!

2 Sep, 2012

Meanie:

I guess it was one of those challenging years, there in the UK. DD should definitely be given kudos. :>)

3 Sep, 2012

Thank you very much Meanie, praise indeed from such an experienced plantsman..... and thank you too Delonix beginners luck perhaps!!

DD2:

I have a feeling it's your vast experience with plants. I've seen how beautiful your garden plants/trees are...

How tall is your Tibouchina urvilleana?

3 Sep, 2012

DD - I just learn from my mistakes!

3 Sep, 2012

beautiful plant DD

4 Sep, 2012

Thanks Lindak, and many thanks Delonix, the Tibouchina is about 3ft tall have stopped it, because I want it to bush out a little.
Meanie don't we all?

5 Sep, 2012

DD2:

Thanks! Tibouchina urvilleana tolerates pruning back very well...although, sometimes it's at the expense of flowers (as they flower only at the tips).

I have a Melastoma candidum 'Kauai Princess' (which is in the same family: Melastomaceae) I want to cut the tips back, however every tip has many buds and flowers.

6 Sep, 2012

Having the same problem now, it is getting lanky but I just don't want to lose the flowers!!

8 Sep, 2012

The best time to prune back Glory bush is in spring here in San Diego. The spring is their dormant (non-flowering) season.

9 Sep, 2012

Thanks, not sure the same would apply here though?

28 Sep, 2012

Does it bloom in spring, there? Tibouchina urvilleana - Glory Bush's normal dormancy or resting period is in spring.

29 Sep, 2012

It is flowering again now, and lots more to come, so playing it by ear at the mo.....as we have only just bought this plant I have no idea of it's habits!!

30 Sep, 2012

It's normal blooming period is from summer through winter, resting in spring.

1 Oct, 2012

So a long flowering time then, but you have the warmth, this will be in an unheated garden room......

1 Oct, 2012

It will tolerate coolish conditions and still bloom....as long as it gets enough sunlight.

2 Oct, 2012

Thanks, it has plenty of that alright in the conservatory....

4 Oct, 2012

It sounds like it'll be blooming for a long time. :>)
