when is the best time to take cuttings and how. Do you have to dig up small shoots/trees, but when is the best time to do this?

I think if you prune it you will encourage suckering! I like this tree but the main complaint I've heard from other people is the suckering problem. I've got one which I've had for nearly three years. I don't know how old it was when I got it but it was about 2 m tall. I have not pruned it and it has not suckered yet. My little refernce book on trees says that it does not need annual pruning, but cut back dead wood or unwanted branches.

They dont seem to be quick growers -not in my garden anyway. I've aquired a few new ones from suckers- theones I don't want I just cut off. I've cut mine back at various times without problems.

Ours has not suckered seriously yet. Only right close to the original trunk. I think I read that if you lop or prune it encourages suckering.

5mtrs high 6mtrs spread. I would only cut it back, prune it for shape. Take off over hanging branches etc.
These trees do sucker i.e. grow from their roots. As a kid my parents had one, it keept growing through the lawn. I had one at a previous house and the suckers pushed up through the concrete.

When I moved house I dug a small shoot up in May. It is now growing ionto a fair sized tree.
You will be safe when all the leaves drop as the plant will be resting then.

i did but no i saw one on ebay the other day just perfect for the spot, its wood and iron, - really good value for the price - well i think! - it has'nt come yet, i'll post pic's of it when it does. i have decided to do away with our manky patio table and chairs as it is too big for the space anyway and looks awful. i do eventually want to get a nice little set to go there, and the bench will go up where brookes play house is - when she grows out of it. but for now i thought the bench would go nice on the patio, we rarely have enough people around to warrent the big table and chairs anyway - and its an imbarrisment! i will proberly keep the chairs just incase. they stack so can just sit up in the shed out of the way - incase we need them, but the table is defo going on the scrap heep!

Intriguing!
I can understand why we know it as the Stag's Horn, but why is it known as the Vinegar Tree where you are,Chris?
Either way, I think it is a very attractive tree. My Father used to grow one in his last garden, it looked lovely whatever the season.

We have Ailanthus too. They pop up unexpectedly. They are growing in many public places like hedgerows and even cracks near walls. They are considered invasive in Hungary too.

Wow! We have trees similar to this all over this town. I looked up this species on the internet and it appears both the names describe the same tree but the tree in this area is also invasive just as Wizzbang has described. I am constantly removing it even though I do not have an actual tree in my yard. Well, I do but I keep it cut down to the ground. It grows else where through root suckers. It is also not a Rhus or Vinegar tree (their fall color is red) This tree is briefly yellow. The local residents say it is a locust tree but that doesn't fit either.
I finally found the answer (I think). I believe it is an Ailanthus altissima which is considered an invasive undesirable tree originating in China. I guess I will just keep removing its offspring.
Thanks for making me sit up and take notice with your picture. I thought sure the trees in our area were the same as this one in your picture but it did make me dig for information. (always a good thing)

Vinegar tree is it's common name here in Hungary. Nobody knows what a Rhus is!!! I think it's because the seeds (berries) are acidic. In my garden it has space but it has not really thrown out any suckers yet.

Why do you call it a vinegar tree?
Rhus is very invasive in my garden - im always chopping it down! Its everywhere and it grows so strongly that it pushes fences over!!!

would agree with Chris, i have one, which i bought last year, but as i found out about the succering problem with them it is now in a large pot, and it seems to be very happy and i can prune it to the shape i want without any unwanted succers in next doors lawn!
