I've found that my Hostas that have white in them enjoy a little sun. They grow bigger and the green and white is more intense.

No mercy!!! But I am trying to find a good organic alternative. I hear spent coffee is the latest. Anyone else try that with any degree of success?

Have a look at my latest blog for an organic alternative! I grow my hostas in a pot with a copper band around it. So far so good....

I only found two entries for your blog...one about the hedgehog and and the other about old garden pics. Am I not looking in the right place? Ever use bran? A friend of mine says the slugs eat it and their gut explodes because it expands. Also it is harmless to other creatures.

I meant the hedgehog Asyaver- they love slugs! Beer traps are effective at killing slugs but I find it a terrible waste (of beer-not slugs!)

Members' notes...

majeekahead

bought from ebay - michael spring 07. large dark green leaves with a crisp narrow white edge and mauve flowers. height 60cm spread 1m

Chrispook

We've got at least 4 varieties. Although in shady spot for a lot of the day the leaves really burnt last summer which rather spoilt their looks. The good news is there are not many slugs.

Hostas like moist conditions and so do slugs and snails. The plant can be ruined in the early stages of growth unless given protection. I use slug pellets and they work well. They also have a reasonable flower that is good for arrangements.
