sow a few in pots in the greenhouse, but just a few incase they don't do well in the greenhouse more can be sown outside in march, if needed.

'Clear out beds'
Clear sunflowers and other dying annuals out of front garden first, and back later. Weed and clear front beds as much as poss. Add leaf mould/compost and dig over in empty areas. Plant white hibiscus, bulbs, other seedlings etc. rebark later when planting done.

My experience has ben that if you keep the seed for next year you might get big sunflowers next time.

Hi Chris, me and Brooke have just sown some red ones in the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago they have germinated already! - ours are 'Claret' - hope they turn out as lovely as this one - beautiful! we are going to plant them either side of Brooks play house!

Mine were Claret too. The ones planted in full sun in the front garden were more deep red, and these others planted in partial shade in the back were more dark rust coloured. Soil also different in back garden. All were very nice and good germination..

LOL indeed! They are Lord Nelson brand 'Wild Mixture' which last year included some great 'feathery' type flowers.

I saw some Mini SunFlowers in Focus yeserday Chris&was very tempted2buy1as i was growing sum this yr until Sum Slugs/Snails ate all 10 Baby plants in1nite:(

Bless those birds!... all the sunflowers in my garden I bought in birdseed mix!lol. with the exception of a lovely deep red one...which seems to have become extinct..or interbred...got red centres and yellow petals. haha.

We're growing a bed of them on our allotment - at this point they are about two feet high - hope they turn out like thse, which are wonderful.

Yes it is an annual. I grew T&M's claret hybrids last year and this is from the seed. Caused a sensation amongst the neighbours last year because in the land of the sunflower here in Hungary they had never seen red ones before.

Gorgeous sunflowers one of my favourites, I've grown some in tubs this year and nipped them out when they were about 2.1/2ft tall, making about 6 flowers now on each stem for a change.

I gave up on sun flowers this year as the Squirels kept chewing the heads off.

I gave up after my fifth year of moose beheading them....can't get them tall enough to stop them...lol. Wonderful pic Chris. Very Van Gogh!

Thanks ladies, I took it earlier this evening. Was worried about the light levels but am pleased with the final result. The sunflower has been grown by my dad and reached a height of 8ft 9ins. Think it's called a Russian Giant. Have a nice weekend. Andy
