I have some of these sitting by the drive gates no idea where they came from but they are very happy where they are and selfseed every year! Hel.xxx.

This is the floral emblem of California...aren't they great? I'm putting them in one of my front beds this summer...bought about five packs ...just going to broadcast...lol. I've grown them before in the north...if they'll grow up there...they'll do fine here.

I keep meaning to pull over and take a picture of these...I see them all the time. The so bright and cheery :)

Members' notes...

majeekahead

very easy - chuck the seed and they grow - like weeds - but well worth having tho!

majeekahead

bought some seeds from T & M autumn 2007.

a gorgeous combination of rose and champagne-pink, hardy annual, height 8-10" sunny position dry soil. summer flowering

scatter sow direct March/April or september/october. in any gaps at the front of the cottage garden area, and woodland bed and also right handside bed, they would also look good around the crocosmia i have planted by the side of where Brookes play house will be - they make an exellent gap filler. think i will also use some in the front garden if i have any gaps out there!

15th March 2008 - sown direct into hot beds, woodland, righ hand and a few scattered in the left hand bed.

Couldn't live without this annual.... The original colour was bright orange, but now all sorts of colours are available from a gorgeous creamy white through to deep carmine, some with fluted petals.

Chrispook

Sown in flower beds on 9th April 2008. Described on packet as Thai silk lemon bush!!!

Common Name: California poppy
Genus: Eschscholzia
Species: californica
Skill Level: Beginner
Exposure: Full sun
Hardiness: Hardy
Soil type: Well-drained/light, Acidic, Chalky/alkaline, Moist
Height: 30cm
Spread: 15cm
Time to plant seeds: March to April

The California poppy will happily self-seed, appearing year after year. A fast-growing annual with feathery bluish-green leaves, it enjoys a sunny site with poor, well-drained soil and is particularly well-suited to gravel gardens. In summer, it produces slender, single blooms that come in shades of orange, red, yellow or white, which are followed by long, curved seed-pods. Sow the seeds in mid-spring where you want them to flower. Deadhead regularly to ensure a long flowering period.

Helofadigger

Very easy and self sowing and thrives on poor soil good job too as this is beside the drive gates and it gets a real battering but it always flowers very well indeed.Hel.xxx.
