These can be stooled back each spring to grow for foliage only. I've just bought one called 'Golden Spirit' that I plan to grow in this way

Yes, I did that with the other one I have. It is a slightly different variety with a rather sprawling habit, so I cut it really hard back. It has still sent out long shoots, but the leaves are bigger, it's true. The one in the photo is rather elderly and in a mainly shrub border so I don't intend to cut it back hard,

Members' notes...

AndrewR

I've had the purple leaved form for many years. Lot of dead wood this year after the hot dry summer of 2006 though

I have two, one of which I cut hard back this year - it survived!

Chrispook

2 new shrubs in 2007. Said to like poor soil so should be happy here. Good growth so far. pretty Autumn colour.

RachelScott_Renouf

large shrub with lovely purple leaves

Sid

A beautiful deciduous shrub whose leaves go through a whole spectrum of purples and bright reds. As an added bonus, the seeds are highly attractive to greenfinches. The green birds hopping about in the purple foliage is a mesmerising sight!
