it can be cut back quite hard to the first node above ground level, where new growth should start to appear.

I bought a variety called 'Helios' because it was supposedly shorter but it still makes 8 to 10 feet in a season

Grown from seed last year coming into flower now [July]
climbing up the trellis on the stone wall.
