Reminders for this plant
Due in about 1 month:
In Asyaver's garden calendar:
'Lift and bring indoors'
Due in 4 months:
In Chrispook's garden calendar:
'Plant in pots and leave in cellar. find pots that they can stay in permanently'
Recommended by Mikec. Will save on work. Should grow bigger. Good idea to look for new ones too with red leaves and bigger flowers. Bring out of cellar in Spring or in house if room. Could put some on terrace in March. Later place in beds where wanted.

Questions on Canna indica
Asked on 25 Sep, 2007 4 replies
I planted a Canna in the middle of a large pot, along with various annuals, back in May. I have fed and watered it but although it has grown about 18 inches and appears happy and healthy, it shows no sign of flowering - it's meant to be a shortish red one. I am very disappointed and wondered if there is still a chance it might surprise me? If not, what do I do with it over the winter, please? (It had a little friendly visitor but I don't think that's the reason for no flowers!)

OK, so my Canna didn't flower, and now I need to replant the pot it's in. But my book says 'Lift the plant when the leaves have been frosted and repot'. But it hasn't been frosted, and is still green and healthy. Please would someone tell me what to do with it over winter - do I cut the leaves off before I repot it, or pot it as it is? What temperature and light does it like until next spring? I have a frost-free greenhouse if necessary. Thanks in advance!! :-) P.S. I got it out and here it is! It has several new shoots growing up.. Can these be split off?

Hi Maple - oh dear. I did hope it might still flower... it was bought at a reputable Garden Centre, so surely not an agricultural one from there? I suppose it might flower next year if I can overwinter it.

Did your canna come in a sealed pack with a picture on it? We had a couple from a local canna nursery giving a talk at our local Garden Club last night. He was critical of some outlets who sold cannas in this way because what was pictured on the pack bore no resemblence to what the rhizome in it was capable of producing. Probably more of a problem with the supplier than the Garden Centre itself.

No, it was in a smallish pot with a plant label - no name though. Next time I go over to the G.C. concerned, I intend to complain! I am very disappointed. It was not cheap!

Hi Spritz, I got a new book at the weekend! It says you should lift the plants in autumn, cut them down, and store the rhizomes in a peat-free compost in frost-free conditions. It doesn't mention the leaves being frosted. Hopefully someone else has experience :o)
On question - My Canna - what now?

Thanks Peter, I'll do just that. I guess I'd better leave the shoots alone, unless anyone knows different???

From my reading Spritz propagation is done by seed or rhizome only. But as you say someone may know different. Good luck with it though and let us know if it flowers next year!!

This is new in my garden. I ordered it as a Canna "Durban" which are meant to have incredibly multi-colored leaves. This seems a bit plain and I wonder if the nursery sent the wrong ones by mistake.

Perhaps the colour comes as the leaves age. ?
I would query it with the supplier. You should get what you paid for, and if they sent a substitute they should have told you.

LOL...They are really bright, aren't they...they took so long to send up blossom that I was concerned that they would be blooming in time for first frost...I have a green white and yellow leafed canna but they have done nothing...the cold spell this spring seemed to set them back and they've been really slow to recover... Not quite tropics, Marguerite...and not quite Toronto either...I'm closer to Montreal at about the 45th parallel of latitude.... five hours from TO by freeway. But when the Cannas are blooming it can look like Hawaii!!

These are such an exotic sizzling colour. Ours are doing very well this year Lori, -probably due to all the rain we are having, but we are giving them lots of food as well. Several are in excess of 7 feet high this year!

I really must get some of the taller cannas... the red I have was labelled 'dwarf canna'... they are taller than I am and they are dwarf???
LOL... Nice to know that something liked all that rain. It has been quite wet here too...but the garden is loving it! There is nothing more heartbreaking that a dry thirsty garden!

My gosh yes ! I'm going to really miss them when they leave. I think they have already started to head south because I'm not making as much nectar daily as I used to.
I saw her sitting on this same bud again today. And you're right. Anyone flying even slightly close to her Canna got chased and scolded !

A few of mine are still blooming Lori, and I think now my hummers are all gone too. The last I saw one was last Tuesday (Sept. 30)........before that there were still at least 4 here. I really miss them.

Members' notes...
bought from woolworths in buy one get one free deal, december 2007.
bright orange/red flowers and stripy orange/red/dark green and gold folliege - stunning plant. grows to 1meter tall x 45cm wide in 5 years.
likes full sun moist well drained soil. and according to my books it is fully hardy in southeast england so need not be lifted apart from division which is reccomended every 5 years while they are dormant. also it is not toxic or irritant!
planted in woodland bed behind the cotton lavender, and blblanket flower
bought from woolworths in buy one get one free deal in december 2007.
bright orange flowers and varigated cream/green folliege. flowers june-september. height 60cm x 30cm wide in 5 years.
likes full sun - moist well drained soil. fully hardy in our part of the UK and only needs lifting every 5 years for division whilst plant is dormant. - prone to slugs and snails but it is not toxic or irritant. cut back all stems to just abouve ground level late autumn.
planted a long the left hand bed in front of buddys area, next to the japanise quince and the crocrosmia.
January 2008, the foxes keep getting thought the fence at this point and wrecking the soil in the process, so i have dug this one up and put it into a large terricotta pot in the greenhouse for now. i have ordered a blue rose from David Austin to plant in its place - it is a very prickly one which i hope might put the foxes off!
They grow well here, and the original 2 have multiplied. I take the tubers in for the winter. Just bought a yellow one hoping for a bit of variety.
a dwarf because it grows to 5 or 6 feet...the standard is 6 to 8. Beautiful clear red flower with solid green leaves.
A water loving plant that can be grown near ponds..so says the package! The flowers are a wonderful orange and the leaves a glorious green, red and yellow stripe...very exotic looking!
The gold has been very slow off the mark...as yet no flowers to post pics of... hope it blooms...not as tall as the Tropicanna or the dwarf red but is supposed to grow to 4 - 6 ft., bloom from July to Sept. in full sun...will tolerate some shade. maybe that's the problem here as the gold is shaded by taller flowers...something to remember when planting next season...
These red Canna were given to me by my boss. I have to dig them after the first killing frost in late fall. The hummers love them and so do I because they remind me of the tropics and Bird Of Paradise.
Bought May 7, 2002 for $7.50 from Dorothy Sidwell's greenhouse. Beautiful orange flooms. One of my favorite Cannas.

As far as I know Spritz it is unlikely to flower now as they need 6 hours of sun a day! Down here they are all starting to die back.
I might have found a reason for the non flowering of yours though!!
It might be an agricultural canna rather than a horticultural one!. They are grown for their rhizome which is full of starch and tend to be sterile.
Have a look at the Wikipedia entry on Cannas
