Pruning question

Asked on 24 Oct, 2008 1 reply

I have Bauhinia blakena that is about six foot tall, with a single trunk. A very large bottom branch is very close to the ground. Can I cut it without fear of killing the plant or should a wait a a year or two? I want it to grow taller with a higher trunk.

Hello, I like your red chilli, they taste good too. Well, the flowers are at least 10 cms wide. I could not get close to it, so held the camera high and zoomed in. But this is easily looked up. I just did and my guess was right 10 - 15 cms. I lived in Darwin and had a pink one in the garden, which I planted myself. I think the flowers were smaller, the tree didn't do too well and it died!
Thanks for looking at my pics. Where are you?

I am in the state of Georgia in the US. We live in a suburb of Atlanta, about 40 miles from downtown. This area is semi rural and some of the farms are very old.

Sounds like a lovely area. We are retired farmers ourselves and had an orchard and vineyard, so we always lived rural and I always had huge gardens too. I now discovered when holding the mouse over the profile pic of the members, you can see where they are! It took a while to find that one out.

Yep, know that one. I fell in love with it when I first saw it, because of its unusual butterfly shaped leaves. The flowers of course are exquisite too. I had one in my garden but I killed it with love I think. Many grow in Cairns, white, pink and purple ones. They sure are lovely.
