The leaves look like leaves on a berry bush. Maybe someone will identify it for you.

I agree MikeC. Are the stems thorny at all?

Is this the plant my friend gave me???? I shall be able to comb its hair without going down onto the stream bank in future years!

Interesting thought Grammazoo, a bugs world must be utterly magical apart from those human beings!

It is quite a large shrub, about 4-5' wide & about the same height, and was here before I moved in. It requires very little maintenance. Flowers only last about a week or so.

pre-existing my tenancy in big back garden.Goatsbeard, Aruncus dioicus, is a North American perennial with feathery plumes of cream colored flowers in late spring or summer

Bought September 2008 in my local garden centre. Planted in the slightly shady border between greenhouse and wall. The soil is pretty damp right now due to a summer of rain, whether it remains damp enough to keep the plant happy in subsequent years I'll just have to see.
