Preservation?

Asked on 27 Jun, 2008 2 replies

Okay, I got another one, but this one (thankfully) is not an issue of life and death! ;) So I've got this healthy aloe vera plant, and he's growing so big! He's got this one arm that's stretching really far and getting too heavy for him to hold up, so it's started to break off. I've broken off his damaged arms and used the aloe before, but I don't really need it right now. The summer is still young, though, and I'd like to save it in case I (or someone else) gets sunburned. Can I preserve the arm somehow? Maybe in the fridge or something?

I would have thought it would go squishy in the fridge - but it's worth a try if it gets knocked off. What have you to lose by trying?

On question - Preservation?

I wonder if it would root if you stuck it in a pot of compost? Son of Vera ;-)

Oh yeah! Hehe, I didn't even see them there! This is in my mom's kitchen, and she loves rabbits. There are little decorations all around the house! I guess I get jaded to them after a while. But I'll make sure she knows that they are appreciated. :)

Eh, I'm all good now. It looks worse than it is, really--especially now that Guvnah's helping out. :) Like I said in the blog, I mostly got a nice tan out of the deal. I think it is strange, though, that all of my sunburn that's left is what's on the tip of my nose ... Oh well. :)

Yes, I had them too. They grew in the ground and just kept on spreading, a whole field of them I had, but it was outside my garden along the drive, so I didn't mind. They flowered too, lovely orange clusters with long bellshaped flowerettes.

Water as needed--easy to take care of! I keep him in the kitchen so I can put him to good use if I get burned or something. I have used his aloe on cuts before, too, and he even helps with that! He loves to help out as much as he can, I guess. :) He's getting so big, too! He grows really quickly for a while, stops for a break, then grows some more!

This easy-to-grow succulent forms dense clumps of fleshy, light green leaves with soft toothed margins. Spikes of tubular yellow to orange flowers appear in summer, but rarely in the UK. It is best grown as a houseplant in the UK. Grow in a mixture of loam-based John Innes No 2 compost with additional sand or perlite for increased drainage. Apply a balanced liquid feed during the growing season and reduce watering in the winter. It should be kept at a temperature no lower than 10 degrees C. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence.
