Questions on Acer palmatum

Acer problem

Our japanese acer appears to have some damage to the ends of its leaves (see photo). It was transplanted from a fairly shady location aboout a year ago to its current spot which is quite exposed both to sunshine and wind. Might this explain why the ends of its leaves have curled and turned yellow or could there be another reason?

You are right - acers don't like sunny or windy positions. Its leaves are telling you to move it into the shade and shelter! We have an expert on this sit on growing acers - look at Sodapopkl's pictures!

Hi Simon
It's wind damage! I've just lost all the leaves on my Acer due to high winds. Needs a very sheltered position. Mine will overwinter and re-leaf next year

Its showing signs of stress and its unhappy in its new position. The problem is probably due to sun and wind exposure. Acers like shady positions away from direct sun and winds that can burn the leaves. They also like to have their roots in a moisture retentive soil but must not get waterlogged. If it is still showing signs of stress you might consider moving it back to a shady and sheltered position.Hope this helps. Best wishes, Grenville.

Hi, yes it's the wind that's caused the tips of the leaf to curl, I've had exactly the same problem with my 2 green acers this year, as since we moved up to Chesterfield the wind is a lot stronger than it was down in Leamington Spa. Don't worry thou the leaves will drop off in winter and new shoots will apear next year, just move it back in a shady sheltered spot :-)

Thanks peter! Yes, these are all on the same plant. The new growth comes out pink and green - you can see some of the curly ones below! The older ones tend to be green and cream. Only little as I had it in the wrong place for a while and it didnt fair well!

Thanks! This was back in early May - I've been reviewing our garden photos today as a way of cheering myself that the mess that is currnetly our 'garden' will, one day, look lovely again. This is one of those and on finding this website, I've been enjoying getting some of the pics out here. I've another acer palmatum - bigger, and in the ground rather than a pot (which this one is for now).

Such a shame you can't have one Michelle. Do you not have a shady, sheltered spot where you could give it a go? They can be quite tricky and temperamental (I lost all the leaves off my 6' Acer due to a position change - too windy) but are worth it for the colour. So long as you keep them well watered in the heat and out of the wind you should be OK.
Good luck with it Doglet! Please post a photo when it comes into leaf. Which Acer did you get?

If it's bought in a pot, you can plant them at any time. Yes, they are fine in pots - big ones - but do remember that taller-growing ones will eventually outgrow the pot and then you will need to plant it in the garden. They prefer sun or a little shade and definitely must have shelter from cold winds (and heavy frost too.) Good luck - which one of the many have you got your eye on? By the way, welcome to GOY!

If they are very small (under, say, 40 cm in height) I would recommend planting them in tubs to begin with - this is because they are slightly frost tender and you can shove them in a sheltered corner over the winter if in pot. They do extremely well in tubs too, but make sure they get enough water. ALso, if small, be watchfull of slugs as they can chew around the base of the stem and effectively 'ring bark' the tree, which will kill it. fBigger/older trees are much tougher! Good luck!

I have several acers. Where you put them will depend what colour the leaves are. Pale green or yellowy will burn in full sun. I've had to move several to a shadier place. Darker cloours are tougher but they don't like to get too dry. I think they are lovely. Good luck with them!
