Well as some of you know I have been having probs with beasties eating my plants..I went out last night, couldnt find a thing..went out today and really scoured the whole back garden and these were my finds!
Mostly wee green caterpillars and maybe the Mother one?
Apart from that 1 or 2 snails and wee black wormy things. So I think it must be the caterpillars doing most of the damage. FOund most of them around the Lupins and Knapweed and a few over the other side where I found the mother one. Anyone any ideas for getting rid of caterpillars?

First I found these beside the Hop Pant..no caterpillars there.

Yhis is the rest of my finds which have now been disposed of

Not really Lil..had to find them ..my palnts are being destroyed!

30 Aug, 2011

The first one is a centipede. It eats other insects and bugs but not plants :o)
I'm glad you got rid of the rest though ....

30 Aug, 2011

Oh I didnt know that..I saw what I thought was a centipede..it was more brown and bigger..but it ran away from me lol..no ideas about caterpillars?

30 Aug, 2011

There are different types of centipedes.
I don't know the best way to get rid of caterpillars. I just squash them lol

30 Aug, 2011

How horrible those beasties eating your ( pants ) sorry couldn't resist. I just squash caterpillars, and i sprinkle salt on the snails. :o)

30 Aug, 2011

Good hunt there Pixi...well done...just spray the catapillars...there could have been quite a family there, we used to have nests in our oaks, which OH sprayed before they hit the ground running for the crops...
Meant to say too...the small black one is a millepede, I get a few in my garden, they curl up when you disturb them, I throw them in the field...they can attack roots of plants..

30 Aug, 2011

Yes Sue it wasnt too bad..will have to keep checking to every day really..there so tiny too! Glad OH got them in time! :)

30 Aug, 2011

I carry an old paint kettle with 1" of salt in the bottom and use an old pair of kitchen tongs to pick the snail/slugs and throw them in the salt and say 'DIE *******!!!'
Is that animal cruelty? :)

Talking about beasties - I bent down to pick off my low growing crysanths what I thought was a half apple. It was actually a gigantic slug. I've never seen one that big or fat (it must have eaten someone's full allotment, it was so huge:))) It was a sort of light brown colour (like a mellowed rotten apple) - I'm just pleased I realised what it was before I touched it!

30 Aug, 2011

You need to go out there hunting ,every day,or evening,Pixi..if you have time..I look in a certain pot with Petunias in,every day..and there are two snails always around the inner edge ! I dispose of them, but they must have had a large family, waiting to take over !..strangely enough, they haven't eaten the plants...

30 Aug, 2011

Yuck Pixi - I thought for a sec you put on your knotweed! Thankfully not :D Lupin tree was covered in the aphids - really hate them - slugs and snails are annoying

30 Aug, 2011

You need some Garlic barrier spray.,Paul.either a bought one,or you can make your own..works wonders on the aphids, and feeds the plants..great stuff, and organic:o))

30 Aug, 2011

OMG SHeilar..I have seen those big beasties too! Scary eh?
Yes tis going to be a daily routine now I'm afraid even in the rain! They dont hang about do they Bloomer! Must be worse than rabbits! lol
I made garlic spray but it keeps getting stuck in the nozzle of the gun..so I ended up throwing it all over the plants! i added cayenne pepper too..they wouldnae like that!!!!!!!! lol
Yeah Paul its not easy this gardening lark eh? this is the worst year for me with beasties and rain and not enough sunshine. :(

Hi! Pixi, I've been thinking...don't say it! Lol! No, when you look at your plants with the holes in, is there slime on them? You know from slugs or snails have been? Because if there isn't, it might well be earwigs doing the damage! The holes they make are really similar, minus the yuck of course! I've heard putting veg oil and soy sauce in the bottom of a can or small container, attracts them and then they drown or smother or something...whatever! it gets rid of them!

30 Aug, 2011

lol Libet..I could hera the weels turning in your heid! lol
No there is no slime that I can see..only slime is a wee bit down by the shed..so it could be snial or slugs on the hosta and knapweed..but where most of the damage is is where I found the catrepillars and millipedes..I tried putting straw in a yoghurt pot upside down on a pole as karen suggested..no luck..will try you suggestion to I got all these weapons and still they come! But i am going to be very diligent and go out every day rain or shine( oh we dont seem to get that these days) and see what I can find to kill..omg we are all murderers arent we! lol :)

30 Aug, 2011

Haven`t you got any frogs or toads Pixi? I get snails but haven`t seen a slug in years, thank goodness, I can remember my grandad and uncle always put straw in upside down plantpots on canes amongst their flowers to attract the earwigs away from them...

30 Aug, 2011

Well I had a frog int he pond,,but I dont know if he is still there or not..not seen it for ages.
Ah i still have the straw in pots but nothing ever in it in the morning..so I dnt know if its earwigs..havent seen any this year..lots of hoverfiles though but I dont think thye do damage. :)

30 Aug, 2011

Just a quickie to point out that you can't have found a mother catterpillar as the mother would have most likely been a butterlfy or moth, althoiugh some larvae of other insects can resemble catterpliars. I think you just meant a larger one.

31 Aug, 2011

Oh yes of course silly me lolol well there have been lots of butterflies about..they are so pretty and I;m killing their babies!!!!!! oh dear..

31 Aug, 2011

Eeeeewwwwwwwwww yuk, you gotta meal there!! Keep ya going for a week. Just add garlic ahahah!

31 Aug, 2011

Aye! Lulu's right!...can send info on how to 'clean' snails! SIMW!! :))
And yes...AWAPTKO!

31 Aug, 2011

A friend put me off eating snails a long time ago!!

31 Aug, 2011

Pixi ... I have just read the following in a gardening magazine:
Put a J cloth in the bottom of pots, so long as it covers the drainage holes & goes partly up the inside of the pot, nothing seeems able to penetrate it, including ants. It will stop slugs from hiding just inside the pot, too. The J cloth material is virtually indestructible & lasts a long time. ... Hope this helps ... :o)

31 Aug, 2011

Good tip,Shirley,,I will remember that one..:o)

31 Aug, 2011

Lol Lulu well I might have to one day..but yuk and ewwwwww Would hate that!
Oh thanks Shirley..so should I put an enormous j cloth over the whole garden? lol Mostly its the plants in the garden..not really affected any in pots! but its a great idea :)

31 Aug, 2011

Lol, Pixi, now I have visions of your garden covered in blue cloth! ... Bloomer, I'll try to remember it too ... no doubt I'll forget though ... :o(((

1 Sep, 2011

Awwwwww come on Pixs sounds like your plants think they`ve landed at a chefs convention, Garlic, cayenne, veg oil, soy sauce you only need to leave the recipe and they`ll do the cooking.lol.

1 Sep, 2011

Oh lol pix....you do do have me laughing...Anyway...don't forget to strain the garlic mix before you put it in the bottle...Cayenne Pepper, well that's a first...:))) whatever it takes eh...
Pix you have PM...

1 Sep, 2011

lol SHirley..well nobody else would have a garden like it! lol
Heh Stroller..I think you are right..might leave out a camping stove for them! Then that would feed the mice..then Suki could eat the mice..lalala
there was an old woman who swallowed a fly..I think she'll die!
Oh yes Sue i didnt strain it..silly me! Idk jsut thought some Caynene pepper in amongst it all would burn their wee mouths off! lol :)
