Well, the most AMAZING thing happened this morning… (okay, I can’t strictly say this has got to do with gardening but)… well, out west there had been a few dust storms yesterday, but when we got up early this morning to deliver junk mail (remember a while back I’d blogged re my new job, which is going great) this is what we saw…..

And when you put the flash on, you could see all the dust particles in the air…

Needless to say we will not be delivering junkmail this morning!

Great looking sky but a bit daunting Pip c....

I presume it is the dust particles and the sun that is causing the weird red colour? How strange is that? I have only ever seen that sort of thing on wildlife programs. It must have been a bit unnerving.

I'm glad you didn't go out delivering in all that dust :o(
Fantastic photos though.

I saw this on the TV news just a few minutes ago Pip, they said visibility was down to a few feet in some places - were they exaggerating? They said it was red dust Bob.
Definitely don't go out with the leaflets in that though.

I agree, Mookins - great photos, but I'd rather marvel at them than be out in it!

Looks awful on the news broadcasts - face masks at the ready!

Yes Bobg, the fantastic red colour was caused by the combination of outback dirt, which is naturally red, and the rising sun, although you couldn't actually see the sun! ;- )

No Lily the were not exaggerating! Well, I don't actually know, but I'm prepared to bet they weren't: I saw a few pics on the news that were taken from Mrs. Macquarie's Chair (the next headland along from the Sydney Opera House - they would be a couple of hundred metres apart) and you could see a faint outline of the "Coathanger" through the dust, but the Opera House was nowhere to be seen! Apparently quite a few people woke up and thought it was the end of the world, I can't say I blame them, it certainly crossed my mind! For the record, 5 tonnes of dust fell on Sydney, 400+ people were admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties, and wind gusts reached 100kms an hour.

Great photos Pip c ... the dust up in Brisbane was a lot more orange and it wasn't as thick as you experienced. By the time it got up here to the north it had lost most of its orangey red colour altogether. I was cleaning up the house and the courtyard garden for days.
