Thanks everyone for your lovely comments.

Clarice ~ Thank you. The rose was actually bred by Francis Meilland in 1935 and was originally called "Mme A. Meilland" in France, "Gloria Dei" in Germany and "Gioia" in Italy. It was re-named "Peace" and introduced to the rest of the world in 1945.
At the very first United Nations meeting in San Francisco in 1945, each delegate received a 'Peace' rose with a note that said "We hope the Peace rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace.”

CrazyDi ~ yes it is scented. A lovely, almost citrusy fragrance.

Janey ~ one of my favourites too. :o)

They certainly are Clarice. I think it is still classed as the worlds best selling rose. Easy to see why.
Thanks Mac. It is performing wonderfully well this year...a change from last year when it sulked all summer long.
Thanks TT. It's one of my favourites.
Thanks Linda. It's not often I get an unblemished bloom on my Peace rose. It really doesn't like the excessive heat here in Kamloops.

Madame Gilli – It is a shame your white rose has got discoloured edges. Does your rose that brought no peace go yellow? The Peace rose was originally named in memory of the rose breeder’s mother. If someone renamed a rose named after my mother - it would signal the outbreak of hostilities.

Gilli..first off..your rose is lovely..I think I can see just a hint of yellow in the middle there. I would like to grow one of these one day...

GF...I have been trying to think of what my children should name a rose if it were named in memory of me..."Aviator" would be my thought..been teaching them to fly since day one.
What they might think is a whole nother thought..lol.

As to what a rose would be named if it were named after my mother? "War" would suffice.
Must be a generation thing....lol
