Part of the stumpery near the woodland garden
The Victorians were very fond of creating 'naturalistic' garden landscapes, and the 'Stumpery' evolved during the nineteenth century.Hollow tree stumps of oak and chestnut were filled with compost and luscious displays of ferns were planted in the stumps. Often the stumps were juxtaposed and arranged into fantastic shapes.
We have filled our tree stumps with native British ferns and Hostas.
At night the stumpery is lit with uplighters.

OMG what a fab idea Grenville my Neighbour Ann who kindly gave me lots of plants 2 get my garden off2a start has old apple tree stumps Now i wonder if shel let me have those ?????
