Northern Cardinal Pair

Northern Cardinal Pair

A pair of puffy Northern Cardinals hunkering down in the snow storm just 2 weeks ago The Cardinal is the Ohio state bird and I can definately vouch for that. During the winter I get quite a few. One snowy day I counted 78 ! I have areas of blackberry briars and heavy undergrowth that they love to nest in also, so they're here all year.

These are great birds. I think we saw some when we visited friends in Colorado.

Pretty birds! I assume the brown one is the female?

Yes, that's correct Sid. The male is the bright red one. Most people like the males better but I think the peachy color on the females is just as pretty. You can't really see how beautiful she is in this pic.

Do you have a pic of your cardinal collection Mike?

I love their song too. Have you ever heard them whisper their song in late winter, as if they were practicing but didn't want anyone to hear? It's wild !

Hi Di...I lived up on the Arctic cusp...on the southern most tip of James Bay...at an old Hudson's Bay Company outpost town called Moosonee. The year of the first really noticeable El Nino...the temps on January 1st in Moosonee are usually an average daily high of minus 20 degree C. but the year of the thaw..l993...it was well above zero for two days over New Years... I had a feeding station on my back deck and fed mostly purple finches, chickadees, evening grosbeaks, pine siskins and pine grosbeaks...Imagine my shock when I looked out one morning to find a female cardinal among the pine grosbeaks...they are red too, probably why she took up with them. She must have been blown in on the storm that ended the warm period...but she was very much out of her element. I called the Ministry of the Environment and the naturalists flocked to see if I was crazy or imagining things... I have a pic of her all alone at my makeshift feeder.... she disappeared in February...I had alerted most people in town who were birders and everyone had seen her at some time but either she got smart and went south or she died...but not before her sighting was confirmed.I christenend her "Amelia" after another famous aviatrix...lol ..it is on the books at Queens Park, the northernmost sighting of a cardinal in Ontario, Canada.

What a story Lori! You are a good spotter. Diohio, this is superb photography. So hard to catch the birds and these just sat there for you. They are beautiful, all fluffed up feathers because of the cold. I can see in the pic it's even snowing. Brrrr, musn't really think of it.
