Helloo little Vole, Now i would of thought he was a mouse BB, We get mice in our garden and there welcome :) last year I found 3 dying at seperate times, only thing i can think of was the slug pellets, (im trying not to use them this year) I was devestated to think it was my fault, even tho Hub reckons they died in Childbirth :))

Dont think it would have been the slug pellets Dee but we dont use any form of pestcontrol except nature.Rewarded by a pair of song thrushes and mistle thrushes which hopefully will keep the slugs and snails in check ! !

He's lovely BB. You say, Bank Vole - does he live in the side of the bank then" We have voles too - protected species arent they?

7 May, 2009

As opposed to field vole they live in dense woodland and undergrowth Dawn.Ours live in the old stone wall, adjoining the churchyard. Think protected by the Wildlife and Country act. Feed on peanuts left by us in crevices ! Lol

7 May, 2009

I think ours are field voles then. We've seen them on the island in the middle of the pond and under a raised bed which had rubble underneath. I used to seem them running into their hole every morning a couple of years ago.

7 May, 2009

Great that you have them anyway Dawn....we have field mice too but too quick to take food to get a photo.! Will persevere though !

7 May, 2009

yep, please keep persevering - you can do it!

Ditto what Jacque said right at the top Bb ;-)

Oh Dawn just had a thought if you ve seen voles on the island in your pond then they may be water voles as would need to swim to get there ?

These are rare and almost akin to having great crested newts now that would be one in the eye for council bureaucrats as you couldnt change the enviroment if you had these !

Thanks Sid.

10 May, 2009

Hi Ray, yes I would have thought they were water voles. Like you say, they must have swum to the island. Agree, how great would that have been for the council, lol.

O soooo cute

11 May, 2009

When we lived in the other house down the road we got bank voles living in the old stone walls. They are getting few in numbers now and it's good when people take the time and trouble to give them some extra food to store. ps water voles I think are larger than the bank voles.

12 May, 2009

Is this a rat?

12 May, 2009

The water vole will dive into the water and submerge whereas a rat will swim on the surface of the water.
The vole of about 4 inches long is a close relative of the rat and mouse, but can be distinguished from either of them by it's blunt snout tiny ears and short tail. Hope this little bit of information helps.

12 May, 2009

Hi Linda, thanks for the explanation. We must have water voles as they are small, like a mouse but I've only seen them swim on the surface of the water. I think I need to take a closer look to check out their ears and tail.

12 May, 2009

Look at the nose and if it is pointed then it is a rat if it is roundish and blunt at the end it's a vole Look it up on the www

13 May, 2009

Thanks Linda, will do. :)
