Hi Lori, yes this particular box is definitely for butterflies - there are pictures of butterflies on the sides. We are however going to make some bat boxes from ordinary soft wood. Most of the bargain boxes we acquired are made of cedar wood which apparently gives off an aroma which is said to attract insects so, together with the attractant which we shall use, we should have some luck. Dek says he has also seen a hummingbird moth which looks so much like it's namesake.
Our woodland is mainly of pine and larch and is a natural habitat for May bugs which, as their name suggests, always put in an appearance during the month of May. The first time we saw them flitting against the window panes at night, we wondered what on earth they were. They are like a very large beetle with strange 'hand like' antennae. Very weird.

Now that is different...I've heard of May Flies..they look like dragon flies with clear wings that fold over their back like a butterfly's but in flight they look like dragonflies... Have posted a pic of an extremely interesting beetle (?) that visited my back garden last summer...It looks like a Lady Bug on steroids...very large but reclusive. Was trying to hide in the vines on my trellis...when I disturbed it to photograph it the thing left gladly.lol.

That does look a bit like a Ladybird, as we usually call them, but isn't it huge!
I don't think I'd like to come across him. Harmless I expect, but what a whopper! Not familiar with Canadian bugs so haven't a clue what it is.

This is for butterflies, right? or is it for bats? I found some good plans for bat houses at the library and this year I'm going to make a bat shelter.
looking over your pictures has been a pleasure. The next picture is for bees or butterflies?? Do you use a particular type of wood, like redwood, for instance? or will any hardwood serve? What other type of insect are you providing shelter for? Last season I saw a very interesting insect which at first glace appeared to be a small hummingbird...but it is a moth!! nature truly is amazing isn't she?
