Phaleonopsis Orchid

Phaleonopsis Orchid

I've been at it again...I went to B&Q yesterday and they had orchids at half price. SO, I bought two. The other one has not got any flowers open at the mo - picture to come when it does! They cost £4.49 each. That included a ceramic pot, but I've removed those as they prevented the light getting to the roots. On the lables it says 'discard when flowering is over' WHAT???!!

Bit fab isn't it ;-) They are looking a bit lack-luster at the moment after being in the cold shop and overwatered (probably with tap water), but I'm sure they'll perk up.

What a bargain I was just wondering about the ceramic pots is it best just to have them in the clear pots then I dont think you will be throwing these beauties out when their finished flowering ....

I'm a complete beginner with orchids, Janette. But I do know that Phaleonopsis orchids need to have their roots exposed to light. They are grown in clear pots - you will see when you lift the plant out of the ceramic pot. The shops have decided they look better in ceramic pots tho! And NO, I defo won't be putting this in the bin when it's finished flowering! The Very Thought!

The ceramic pot is a culture question, Sid... I leave mine in them for the humidity factor... is the pot that the plant is in a clear plastic one? just set inside a terra cotta pot? (That's how they sell them over here.) I was looking at them yesterday at the local independent grocer and they wanted $17.95 for one...but lovely specimens... The discard message is typical of our society, aye?... I would post a note with my telephone number beside the display...saying" when it's time to dispose of your orchid...I'm a disposal expert...please call me..." LOL...
Almost forgot to congratulate you... lovely plant!!

Stunning Orchid Sid.......when it's flowered I would just keep it ticking over till the stems shoot out again. My Dutch Lady has sent out two new stems one with flower buds....Poppy decided to leap onto the windowsill and snapped it clean off!....Grrrrrr.........

Hi Lori - yes the orchid is growing in a clear plastic pot, which the retailer had put in a ceramic pot.......I thought Phals needed light at the roots for them to grow well? Something to do with a symbiotic relationship with algae I think? Re disposal notice - now that's an idea x-)

Janey...OOHHHH - Naughty Poppy-pops!!! 0_0 Have you forgiven her yet? ;-)

That's the throw-away society gone truly mad. It will give you pleasure for many years to come Sarah.
