December Daffodil

I took this photo in my front garden on the 29/12/2008. I have never seen a daffodil in flower so early!

The daffodils in the garden up the lane have been in flower for some time, too.
In Minehead, (along the coast from us), which has its own micro-climate, the daffodils start just before Christmas and continue in drifts until well into April - it's very clever planting! Somebody knew their species!

The historical national emblem of Wales is the Leek. The use of the cenhinen bedr, the daffodil as a symbol of Wales, is a modern creation. The plural word of Cenhinen is Cennin. There is a 13th Century Church in the Conwy valley called Llanbedr y Cennin near Rowen. Natural daffodils grow there and no doubt resulted in the name of the church.

Daffodil is the English name for the Latin botanical name, Narcissus . The centre is said to hold the tears of Narcissus, who in Greek legend fell in love with his image reflected in a pool of clear water, and pined his life away.

You state that this daffodil was photographed on 29 December. You do not state when it first flowered. If yours flowered later than those referred to by Andrew and Spritz it will probably be because you are located further north than them in the south of England.

You need to try and track down varieties 'Cedric Morris' or 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation' to get the earliest flowering daffodils

I'd be interested to know the variety of the ones they have planted in Minehead - and in that garden I pass on my walks with Henry!

Thank you Andrew..will do!
Those names sound familiar, in particular the 'Cedric Morris'..
