Amazing photo, I love the detail. I think that they're considered pests, but I'm not sure. You've got a great photo to show your local nursery person to find out though :)

Well, this one is a real beauty, ours don't have those black dots on them. But all grasshoppers are pests as they just love chewing leaves. Remember the locust plagues in Egypt? Well, here in the West some years they are so terrible, like big black clouds they come swarming in and just settle on any paddock, stripping the grass, on a garden, gone in no time, in an orchard, all leaves gone! Trouble is, plants breath through their leaves, they make food from sunlight ( photosynthesis ) and can only do so through the leaves. In other words, the locusts can kill the trees, plants, shrubs, flowers etc. They also love rose petals. Luckily we personally have never been plagued by them, but some farmers have.
What else?
