Maranta plants
I think it is a kind of calathea. Nice plant in the Darwin nursery.

Gwedas, that is what attracted me to them, they are so beautiful, especially when you seen so many pots together. I am sure they are calathea's. I will check them out on google.

Actually, these plants are Maranta species which is related to Calathea. It is the opposite way Calathea is related to Maranta...because both genera are in the Marantaceae family.
I really like these plants, however, here they usually get brown leaf edges because of San Diego's hard-water. The San Diego Zoo has some nice plants (Maranta, Calathea) growing in shade though.

Thanks Delonix.

I know that calathea and maranta are very confusing - I have had both. Am I right in thinking that maranta fold their leaves (hence common name "Prayer Plant") and calathea do not? Or is that too simple a way of identifying them :-)

Shirleypoppy,
That's pretty much it. Maranta folds their leaves and Calathea just pulls their leaves close together when conditions are harsh such as full hot sun to protect them.
What else?

It does seem to lean toward the pattern of a calathea but I wouldn't bet the farm on it!! lol.
