Albizia julibrissin (albizia julibrissin)

I grew this from seed collected in Greece - so have been waiting a few years for it to flower!

Also known as a silk tree or Mimosa tree. They grow in Arizona also but are not native...I have grown them in the past..A tree full of those little puffs is quite attractive..The leaves look very delicate and feathery.

I collected the seed in 1999. So it would of been sown in 2000 and planted out in about 2003-4. Thsat makes it my Millenium tree!! It is in a sheltered spot at the top of our garden, (we are in a valley bottom) so it avoids any frost we do get. It has got through at least 2 severe winters with thick snow and v cold temperatures. My olive tree lost ALL its leaves one year but the Albizzia was ok - it just lost a few branches.
We did have to wait quite a few years for it to flower...
I'm finally learning patience as a gardener - I suppose it comes with age...

We are too exposed then to even think about growing it here, hilltop, no shelter from the cold north westerns and in north yorks. Super views though!
