Rotting Ceanothus Tree

Having to get rid of my Ceanothus as it was dying, so I'm in the throughs of digging it out, Wow! The root's are very big so I will dig down as far as I can & cut them off & cover, hopping they don't sprout up again, then put down weed supresser & gravel over. The soil I dug out is going round My Pond. See next picture of Pond.
