I've never grown one from seed but I have started new plants by bending a stem over so that the top (umbrella) is just under water and soon the umbrella will start to grow roots. When the roots are long enough I snip the stem and pot the new plant.

Wow, I didn't know that.
What an easy way to produce new plants.
What else?
This photo is of species Cyperus alternifolious.
See who else has plants in genus Cyperus.
This photo is of "Umbrella Palm" in Diohio's garden

I believe this is the same plant that I grew as a houseplant in the bathroom of my flat back in the seventies. It seemed very happy there.
