Humming bird in Pedilanthus bracteatus - Tall Slipper plant

Humming bird in Pedilanthus bracteatus - Tall Slipper plant (Pedilanthus bracteatus - Tall Slipper plant)

The cute hummingbird was sitting in this Pedilanthus plant at Sea World San Diego. It obviously like the sap from the flowers. Photo taken July 11, 2018.

Awe is nt he just cute wish we had them here. Nice plant too.

14 Jul, 2018

Penny,

I think this one is female. lol! The ones that are very colorful are the males.

Pedilanthus is a popular succulent shrub here...it grows only to about 3 m (or 9 feet here).

15 Jul, 2018

Of course the male being colourful to attract the females 😁 Even the males loose colour also changes colour from dull to bright it said on a documentry I watched a while back.

15 Jul, 2018

It's amazing how the coloring changes on the hummingbirds when they fly. You can see the green, blue and magenta on the males when they're fighting. (I used to think they were playing!) lol!

15 Jul, 2018

Lol what you like thinking their fighting was playing. Yes it is amazing to watch the colours on them change. On the documentary they showed very good close ups of them hovering to get nectar from the flowers also changing colour especially when fighting over territory of food from the flowers.

15 Jul, 2018

Yes, hummingbirds are amazing creatures! I love when they come up to me and drink water from the hose, while I'm watering plants.

16 Jul, 2018

What a great experience to see your so lucky. Do you put sugar water out for them Andy?

16 Jul, 2018

Yes, definitely a terrific experience! :>))

No, don't ever put out sugar water. It needs to be changed too frequently...and if isn't it can make the hummingbirds sick. Also, there's enough flowering plants around to make the hummingbirds fat! LOL! :>))

16 Jul, 2018

Right I did nt know it had to changed often and makes them ill if not changed. Lol defiently in your garden Andy I bet they have a feast.

16 Jul, 2018

Yes, the water should be changed at least every other day...the water goes bad especially with the heat we have here in the summer.

Yes, the hummingbirds definitely find a lot of food here in my yard. :>))

17 Jul, 2018

Yes I know water goes off quick carbon monoxide gets in hence why water tastes bitter if you drink it in the morning after letting sit over night by your bed side. I was always taught by my mum always run the tap until it comes from the main stand by tap out side you can tell as it gets colder especially in hot weather as germs gather in the pipes leading to our homes.

I bet they think they are dining out first class on your plants. I hope they wear a dinner jacket lol.

17 Jul, 2018

Yes, they're dining on all the flowers blooming now.

21 Jul, 2018

Brilliant so they are filling their bellies lol your so lucky to have such visitors .

21 Jul, 2018

During the winter there's a lot of flowering tropical trees so that keeps them feed through the whole winter season, also. :>))

21 Jul, 2018

I was wondering what they fed on through the winter thanks for the enlightenment . I suppose where there are indigenous animals the habitats goes with them .

21 Jul, 2018

Most of the plants, trees are exotic from other parts of the world...however, the hummingbirds love them!

23 Jul, 2018

Seems they have a better variety of food than we have. lol

23 Jul, 2018

Yes, especially in winter. They need food during winter...if not, they'll die. This is why most are native to the American tropics.

23 Jul, 2018

Yes good job they don't live here as our government don't seem to care what native foods help to make our wildlife survive or need they would budoze it to build on they did at the top of my lane .

Just came on local news a state of emergency one below if we were going to be hit by a atomic bomb through the heat we are not to go outside from now until Friday is over to close all curtains and on Thursday it will hit 100 degrees here in the UK.. Which is the day I do my shopping. 🙄

24 Jul, 2018

Wow! A lot going on there! Yikes! It sounds like the horrible heat is there, also. Yuck! Stay cool. Heat can be extremely dangerous...especially if you're not used to it.

It's suppose to be around San Diego County temps up to 109ÂșF (43ÂșC) today and through Thursday before it get somewhat better. UGH! The desert has the extremely dangerous heat 117 - 122ÂșF (47.2 - 50ÂșC) this week. Most of the South-west is under Excessive Heat Warnings through Thursday.

24 Jul, 2018

Yep its here had it for a while now but not as hot as 100 F I ll wait and see I find it hard to believe the weather forecasts now as earlier it said thunder storms in the midlands where I live on Thursday.

Yes I live close by an ambulance station which pass by my home just off the main road which I can see from my window there defiently has bĂšen more blues and two recently (sirens going ) I wont get sun burn I never go red I go brown even if I soend a few minutes in the sun like gypsy skin . I ve hardly been out in it and you can see my arms in this photo has gone brown already. I hardly sweat either never have done and I ve always drank lots of tea or water even though the stupid EU rules say water does nt hydrate you when it does any pops and booze dehydrate you.

Even hotter than here then Andy I sympathise with you must be horrible for you a lot here are complaining the fan business is doing well though lol I ve not got one they dry my throat like air conditioning does.

24 Jul, 2018

Yes, it's been horribly hot here! UGH! I've seen many of the temps there throughout the UK. It's what our normal summer-time highs are here on the mesas in San Diego (where I live) lol! I know it's not funny! If you're not used to such heat it can take a heavy toll on you.

Luckily, tonight it's not too hot, at least it's not 90ÂșF (32ÂșC) at 11:00 pm or midnight like it was on Monday and Tuesday. The morning low temps (around 5:00 am) have been around 75ÂșF (25ÂșC).

27 Jul, 2018

They said today its going to be the hottest day so far here and if we think that's bad Japan is three times worse lol Forecast for next week Monday Tues Wednesday Thursday rain every day except here where I live showers and sun shine lol. Greece has had bad fires. The fire brigade in Nuneaton a close town to where I live having to attend grass fires are hoping for rain.

I can imagine it's really horrid where you are Andy you need the rain that some Asian countries have had in one their dam burst.
Yes I agree the heat can take it out of you how you sleep and work in it I don't know I would throw a sickie 😁. I have my own way of keeping cool if I get to hot which is seldom I run cold water over my wrists and bends in arms and place a cold pice of towel at the back of my neck. Thunder and lightening here last night and a big burst of rain but it only lasted a few minutes.

Glad it's going to be cooler there for you at least you ll be able to sleep.

27 Jul, 2018

Yes, there's sure a lot going on in the world these days! WOW!

There's been a lot of horrible, destructive fires here in California. It's insane!

It's a very warm night here at 11:30 p.m.

29 Jul, 2018

Yes I heard on the news about California fires terrible they seem to be doomed for fires only last year they had some bad ones I recall.

I can imagine Andy I dont know how you constantly cope with no rain for so long to cool and clear the air .
Its been colder here now gale force winds blew my big pot over with my Brugmansia in it and its been raining bucket fulls from yesterday all today and forecast for tomorrow rain again.. Looking at the black clouds going fast and very low at present.

29 Jul, 2018

Yes, the fires here in California have been catastrophic!

Today was another extremely hot day, which doesn't help the fires. It was 10 to 15 degrees hotter than originally forecasted in most cities around San Diego County.

30 Jul, 2018

Is this normal as I ve never heard of California being hit prior to last year and this year. A lot of our fires on the Moor s were started deliberately also around our towns and cities.

Wow I bet that is unbeariable to cope with. I ve known it more unbaearle in other years here than this year.

30 Jul, 2018

Yes, it's normal to have a lot of fires in California. There's a lot more larger fires than normal because of the extreme drought conditions, though.

Yes, the heat here is relentless now. Today is even hotter than yesterday, I got up early this morning and it was already 80ÂșF (27ÂșC), after a hot night.

30 Jul, 2018

Ahrr right. Of course with the heat it will makes it worse.

I know the feeling as we have had it in the 30s and above here I would of gone back to bed lol.

30 Jul, 2018

Yes, the temps here have been 94 - 101ÂșF (34 - 38ÂșC) with humid conditions where I live inland San Diego. Right along the beaches have had temps 82 - 92ÂșF (28 - 33ÂșC). The beaches have been so packed with so many people, which is typical for this time of year. The Pacific Ocean temps have been consistently warm along the coast: 75 - 81ÂșF (24 - 27ÂșC) for the last month.

31 Jul, 2018

So hot don't think I could stand 100f if the air was warm or dry. Nice you live right by the beach. Yes I can imagine you have loads of people going there another thing I hate crowds of people one reason I never visit my own city town they have let to many immigrants in here which in a small city centre is horrid and stifling .

1 Aug, 2018

I don't live by the beach. I wish! LOL! There's lots of people here all year long. We're one of the few cities in the U.S. where the weather stay warm and dry all year.

2 Aug, 2018

Oh so you live more inland rather than close by the coast.

2 Aug, 2018

My area is considered coastal-inland. I can see the ocean from my house because of my elevation at about 500 ft. It's probably 10 miles to the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies.

4 Aug, 2018

So you have the best of both worlds lucky you.

4 Aug, 2018

We're still dying of heatstroke, though! UGH! It's still far enough inland to receive the really hot weather.

7 Aug, 2018

Lol you do make me laugh Andy dying of heatstroke run cold water over your wrists bends of your arms damp cold cloth on the back of your neck that will cool you down ice in a bowl for your feet.

Yes I can imagine you get it hot inland where you are it's been raining here all week. I think we are pinching all your rain and other areas here in Coventry.

12 Aug, 2018

It doesn't help much with this horrible heat and humidity. It actually cooler down to just above normal today. It won't last, though.

Penny, it's been the hottest August on record so far for much of San Diego.

15 Aug, 2018

I know how you feel here it was sohard to breathe even Hywel commented on it. As I said to Lori parts of Australia have it terrible having to sell off their cattle no food for them dying in the heat they said they don't want to sell but have to rather than loose them all.

Wow I bet you feel like you are in that desert Andy

15 Aug, 2018

I know you've had a really hot summer there, also.

It doesn't feel like the desert here. It's been very hot and humid, it feels more like Miami, Florida.

15 Aug, 2018

Like here then the kind of heat that makes you sweat. It might make your home more valuable lol.

15 Aug, 2018

Yes, very sweaty! Yuck! Lol! :>))

The dew points are definitely much higher here.

16 Aug, 2018

Lol an ice bath will sort that 😊 yes I would think they were higher.
