It came as a surprise that it opened. There is no bud that you can see the day before, it just pops up during the night and opens.

That is lovely!
I grew a couple of species from seed a few years ago. This one went into summer dormancy and never came back but I still have F.ferrariola. It hasn't bloomed yet, maybe in the spring fingers crossed.

These need a dry summer dormancy and plenty of sunshine and water in the winter. If you treat them like a summer bloomer, they will not change their habits. This species originates in the sandy soil of Namaqualand, so very well drained soil is a must.

I am just lucky it is fairly easy to replicate the weather in South Africa, here. I don't look forward to the dry but humid conditions in July and August, but it is what my bulbs need.
