Bird of Paradise

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae (Bird of paradise))

It is that time of year when the Birds of Paradise start flowering.

I love these flowers. I did bring back a small plant from Madeira a few years ago, but despite a heated greenhouse it failed.

I think there are a couple of flowers forming on mine, which is in the conservatory, just frost protection. I do like them, but they drip a sticky sap.

These short ones drip very little if you compare them to their bigger cousins, S. Nicolai. While these have 1 and sometimes 2 heads, the big one will have 5 or 6 which drip from a height of 15+ feet.

I do hope mine doesn't get any bigger. It's outgrowing the conservatory, that and the 2 Calamondin Oranges and the Meyers Lemon.
