Making the most of a sunny day

Making the most of a sunny day

Feel sorry for the wildlife with the damp days of late.

Never mind the wildlife...what about us gardeners!! ;) but seriously...hasn't it been dreadful. Everyone and every living thing is soggy. Even the flowers have had enough! The local flock of sparrows is trying to take shelter in my greenhouse. They've never gone in there before, but every time the roof vents open, in they go! I must have had a dozen in there today.

I feel for you Karen but down here we still haven't had enough to wet the ground properly. I've only just finished watering outside.

Karen, that's desperate measures for the Sparrows isn't it? Not heard of them flying in to shelter in a Greenhouse!

I was really cross today when I found brown flies (? fruit flies) on my GH Tomatoes ... took the big pots of Toms outside and watered them ... hopefully the flies will have either drowned or flown off!

Honestly Shirley, I don't know why they go in. They dont seem to be eating the toms, and theres nothing in there to attract them. I'm wondering if the blueberry bushea right outside the greenhouse is where they are drawn to. I put fleece over them today though, and still I had a host of sparrows. They seem to go in through the roof vents. I've put two windmills in the hedge to try to deter them. We'll see if that helps.

It seems ages since we had a totally dry day, and the wind too (sigh!) I'm out watering my baskets even in the rain as the wind is continually drying them out. I get some really funny looks from passing motorists as I'm out there with my watering can and a mac on lol!!
The sparrows are something I could cope with Karen, although I must admit I've never known then go inside a GH before. My window vent is open quite a lot but I've never had any trouble with birds getting in.

Karen, I think the birds are being seduced by those Blueberries!

Amy, such a shame to have lost most of the berries to the birds. Glad you like the photo.

Nice to see a bee so busy in a Cosmos flower!

Even though East Anglia is probably the driest region of the UK we still have had a great deal of rain! Just 2 days ago I emptied out the rain water from the saucers under the pots on the balcony railings - today I had to do it again!

I discovered yesterday that some of my Geraniums (Zonal) & 1 of the 2 Pelargoniums on the railings had rotting leaves, some fungus infection it looks like. I removed all the dead leaves & any leaves that looked to be going yellowish. They don't like this wet, cold weather of late July 2017!

A very pretty picture.
Here we have regular torrential showers followed by a sunny spell. The sky and countryside has definitely got an Autumn tinge now.

What a shame Balcony ... I wish this weather would settle into a more summery pattern!

Thanks Chris, your part of the country is renowned for the warm, wet weather isn't it? Oh no, don't say Autumn already ... :o(
