I tried growing potatoes last year in bags. What a waste of compost that was!

waddy it is easy to grow potatoes , not much care , just have to be patient and know when to uncover them, it takes a while

I planted those tatties in March. I find that the yield is a little lower than expected, but its still worth doing. You do get a lot of 'wasted' compost, but I reuse it to top up the raised veg planters. Otherwise it would be a waste. I have four sacks and each one has yielded about 5lb of potatoes from 1 or 2 tubers...so quite good. But they have to be fed and watered often and regularly. The tops have been a bit weak this year, and battered by storms. None have flowered, but still...plenty of potatoes.

i planted my potatoes in late may so i have a while to go yet, some did flower, rain pelleted them down a bit but i hope for a good harvest squashes are coming real good, 90 degrees here today!

Wow Vjd...how do you cope with those temps. I reckon we had about 25C here today and I was struggling.

one spot in my yard is cool , under the pines way in back.4 pm and up to 93F and humidity is soo bad. should cool soon i hope?

Vjd, I did everything I was supposed to do, but the yield was still too poor to make it worth while, and I planted more than one variety.

Karen; I didn't waste the compost as such, I dug it into the veg patch, so I suppose that's not too bad.

Waddy. that the bad thing about growing potatoes, you cannot see the product until the end when you uncover them, last yr. i had a good yield , this yr i don't know, i put in a variety also.just have to wait and see.

Hey Karen, did you ever try making grilled cheese sandwiches with ham & tomato? I just made my first one today and not with just any tomatoes, my tomatoes! No words can describe how delicious it was! You'll have many more baskets to come!

19 Jul, 2017

Lol Bathgate! Good for you...yummy! I actually have to stop eating tomatoes because of acid reflux....bummer! :(

19 Jul, 2017

Oh I'm sorry Karen! I was unaware of that.

20 Jul, 2017

That's ok Bathgate. No problem at all....of course you didn't know.

20 Jul, 2017

Well done, at least the family will enjoy the tomatoes !!

21 Jul, 2017

Yes, I made another pot of sauce today for Callum. :) I stink of tomatoes.

21 Jul, 2017

I'm in the same boat with tomatoes, Karen. I've always been able to grow them and last year I had a great harvest from two Roma plants... the tomato sauce is wonderful and they are the one var. I can use as they have lots of pulp and fewer seeds and a lower pH. On a cold winter day you can open a bottle of tomato sauce and have lovely warming home made tomato soup.... with a nice grilled cheese sandwich!

Im making sauce again today! Most of it is in the junior Fraser's freezers now. Lucky them!

I'm having a bit of a famine year, Vjd. No apples on the trees (...well three on one) and my late planted tomatoes (a gift from a friend who couldn't believe that I, of-all-people, should have no tomatoes in my garden!) have a few spindly blossoms and it's cold as Christmas outdoors. When will they ever ripen?
I still have one bottle of tomato sauce from last year though...it's the spicy one, with ginger, garlic and hot peppers. You're welcome for lunch!
Karen: I hope the juniors appreciate their Mom's efforts... It's hot work (most summers) doing the canning in the heat of day.
Wind is out of the east today...which usually brings bad weather... we've had a foot of rain since yesterday and temps in the single digits! (did I mention the east wind?
.. Scotland weather!) ;-))

hi Lori, this has been a weird yr for plants and trees! my ornamental pear trees did not blossom so no small fruit on them? my cherry bush is the same, my irises came up but are not blossoming[ one did out of about 25] lots of tomatoes but no sun rt now to ripen, has rained heavy for the past 2 days and very overcast now, temp dropped into the 60s was last week 90s. hope all this rain does not ruin the veggies grass keeps growing! cannot believe you are getting the cold already,

25 Jul, 2017

Oh Lori! Welcome to Scotland! lol!
