Thank you all - feel the setting and age of property dictate the type of garden I should plan.Very much a blank overgrown canvas with lots mature trees.

Beautiful!! There is always such a sense of accomplishment when a job is far enough along that you can see your vision.

Hope they mature faster than me , Joannie. Thanks Greenjeans the garden very neglected and the ivy on the wall grew further than edge of border.Very lucky with soil rich dark anyone with sticky heavy clay soil would love it.

"sticky heavy clay soil"
That would be me!! Unfortunately, that is what most of my soil is. I am working on mixing compost in and covering with shredded soft wood mulch that will decompose by next year. I hope to do this at least twice a year and eventually have that dark rich soil that you speak of. I have an area that will be my woodland setting once I clear the vines and undergrowth (time, time, time ...where is some more time) I hope to find some good soil under the canopy of trees there. I hope it turns out as pretty as yours.

Sorry about your soil Greenjeans the woodland plants should love it - just so heavy and clingy to work with.Horticultural grit does help with drainage.
