This looks like a Night Heron but I'm not sure which one, there are 2 var. in the eastern US but maybe more in the west

I think that you're correct, Wohlibuli. Looks like a Black-Crowned Night Heron.

Nothing like our herons - these much prettier and smaller.Makes a change for us Brits to have something bigger!

Bonkersbon- I thought that it was an Egret, too. When I looked up both birds the heron pics looked more like the one I've got here. Look 'em up on line and tell me what you think :) I'm really not sure either way.

Took your advice Tasteyg,googled night heron and looks just like yours.Apparently v. widespread across US think I ll stick to UK birds in future!
