Though he's not a plant, I'm sure my little zebra finch will want to learn more about the plants throughout the apartment! I've only had him about a month now, and I'm working on getting him hand-trained so he can come out and fly wherever he wants without me having to worry about catching him!

Hi Taffy... he's really sweet.. good luck with the training. Last fall I forgot and left my patio door open when my lovebird was out...he flew out into the backyard and sat in a tree...lucky for me it was October and a mite cool..so he finally came near the deck and I was able to get him inside...just be careful of open windows or doors when Lief is out...!

Yeah, I used to have another finch (female this time), and she was quite possibly the cutest thing on Earth!! She was so well-trained, too, and I let her fly all around the house! I made sure that the doors and windows were closed when she was out! :D Leif is a bit more stubborn and obstinate, so I'll DEFINITELY make sure he can't get outside!

I also used to keep a pair of these in my apartment (when I was much younger and single). They just flew from room to room most of the day. is there a reason for his grand Scandinavian name, Taffy?

Well, my ex-boyfriend gave me my first finch as a Valentine's Day present and named her Valkyrie. He was studying Norse mythology at the time and thought it'd be really cool to name her that. She died in the fall, and, when I got Leif, I decided to keep up with this Norse name scheme. I looked up the culture of Norse names and found that they are a big identifier in Norse culture! It just felt appropriate for Leif to have a crazy-long name, so I looked up a bunch and found some that sounded good and fit him. Here's what his names mean:

Leif - beloved, descendant
Alfarin - elf eagle (PERFECT!!)
Bellebi - to bellow or roar (oh, the irony!)
Oddvar - the point of a spear
Aggemund - gift, protector
Einar - lone warrior
Brosa - smile, a gust of wind (if you've had a finch that can fly, you know what I'm talking about!)
Litvarr - tiny defender
Delling - the shining one
Thorburn - warrior of Thor (Norse god of Thunder)

It's just for fun, really. Once he gets trained and can come out of his cage without me having to worry about him so much, I want to decorate his cage with Norse pictures and stuff. :)

Utmerket! Taffy, as they'd say in Norway, lol! And yes, I was once familiar with that "gust of wind" sensation. Idea! Attach a home-made wooden longship hull to the base of his cage, or a pair of "horns" to the sides. Do let us see what you do, anyway!
