Phalaenopsis rebloom (Orchid)

This is now a far deeper velvety burgundy with less yellow than last year - strange!

Thanks Bloomer and Amy!

Bloomer - I've been doing the same thing with my Strelitzia since the end of November!

I would love more,Meanie, but lacking other suitable positions and window sills ! :o)

Dendrobium for the bathroom?!

9 Jan, 2012

It is a beauty though.

Thank you Homebird!

I recently bought a Christmas cactus for there,Meanie..sadly, a lot of buds have now dropped off,but maybe when it has settled in,it will be ok.I will keep a Dendrobium in mind,as a back up,just in case :o)

That's pretty normal isn't it? Should be ok next year though. Only problem is that bathrooms tend to get cool at night.........

10 Jan, 2012

Is it,Meanie? I didn't know that..our bathroom isn't too bad..so may be ok in the long run..I don't want to risk moving it now..isn't that supposed to be a reason for bud drop ? It's the first time I have had one,but I saw so many nice ones on here,I wanted to try one..

10 Jan, 2012

It is the reason for bud drop on a lot of houseplants. Apparently, Clivia are very prone to it, so I'm waiting for them to be reduced before buying.
Your Schlumbergera will need warm temps when budding up.

My bathroom is ideal for my Dens, as it's north facing and gets reasonably cool over night. The downstairs bog is even better, but short on space.

I think it was already in full bud when I bought it cheap from a garden centre..lots of them for sale after Christmas, gift wrapped, only £2.50p each..so it was probably subject to all kinds of temps..I will leave it where it is,and maybe it will become acclimatised at some point..If it doesn't survive,at least I haven't lost much, price wise..thank you for the info,Meanie, very helpful..:o)

You can't kill them!!!!!

10 Jan, 2012

That's good Meanie ! I have just done a web search, and found some good info,so have bookmarked it for reference...There was no label at all on mine..!

I have been trying to work out whether or not I could possibly grow an orchid or two on my large Schefflera..what do you think Keith?

14 Jan, 2012

Absolutely no reason why not, apart from the fact that mounted orchids require daily care (unless you were to attach it in the pot).

14 Jan, 2012

No...not in the pot...could use some natural woven plant pot though...?

14 Jan, 2012

Coconut shell, top removed and sawn in half, cleaned out and then glued back together maybe?

14 Jan, 2012

Mmm...great idea..what kind of readily available orchid do you think would be best to try Keith?

15 Jan, 2012

Where is the Schleffera sited (what kind of temps and light will it see)?

15 Jan, 2012

In the Conservatory. It is heated, so never less than 10 at the very least and loads of light.

15 Jan, 2012

Not good for a Dendrobium then, which would have looked superb!

Got a couple of ideas - Phalaenopsis, Cattleya or one of the Oncidium alliance (sold as Cambria). The beauty of the last two is that they have pseudobulbs, which means that watering will not be such a chore.........

16 Jan, 2012

OK, thank you Keith. I will certainly look into those. I have grown Phalaenopsis in the conservatory very successfully in the past, in pots, but I don't like them in pots much and they don't look very good when not in flower. On the trees here they look superb all the time of course. I shall focus on your other two suggestions. Thanks again.

Another slightly more expensive option, but well suited, would be Vanda.

16 Jan, 2012

Oooh, ok thanks!

16 Jan, 2012

Oh, now we're talking...you get blue vandas!!

16 Jan, 2012

Easy when I'm spending someone elses money!

16 Jan, 2012

...true! :) Well I just had a look at the other two suggestions and I can't decide which I would prefer...I love them all...perhaps I'll have three..one of each! :)) I'm definitely having a hibiscus of some sort too though. Wonder if I could sneak a humming bird in my case! lol :)

16 Jan, 2012

Get a few and have a rolling display!
