Betula Utilis Jacquemontii with Evergreen Canary Broom (Betula Utilis 'Jacquemontii')

What a bright picture these two make...uncharacteristic for mid-December!

A word of caution Paul, this evergreen broom - Cytisus Racemosus - is not fully hardy. I bought it for a pot (said it was a small shrub) but it grew like mad and I decided, as it had to be repotted, that I would risk it in the border as it is far too big to go indoors. I doubt it will get through the winter. I should really have taken cuttings shouldn't I....wonder if it's too late...maybe have a go tomorrow. Thanks!

we have a cytisus la coquette in the front and cytisus hollandia in back which is yellow - shame they're not hardy - lost a couple last year - no surprise :(((

tbh I won't be too sad as it's too big and it grows out in every direction! Pretty colour flowers though :)

Thanks TT.

Looking good together, I love the Betula Jacquemontii, would love one of these trees.

It has a chance in a mild winter though?

Yes, I think so Meanie....there's a chance...especially now it has a thick blanket of bark chippings over it's roots.

Pretty pic, I love the Betula

Me too Annie, and the downy birches, which grow wild in the glens and have red stems in the winter are my favourite trees. They are only small, but I love them! The white stemmed ones give me so much pleasure in winter.

I'm amazed at the broom still going strong surreylad. Thank you. I did start out with a weeping birch but the wind shredded it and blew off all the branches so we decided to go for something slightly stronger! Lovely though...in a less windy spot! :)

Eek ! A broom in your lovely garden . Not here on the west coast of Canada , we rip them out if we see one in our yard. My garden club has little work bees to cut them to the ground just before they set seeds, so they don't spread. Must say they sure look nice against the birch tree.

Thank you Kimm. I bought this as a tiny plant and it said on the label that it was a 'compact' shrub and easy to grow. I planted it in a small pot and it went crazy....then I found out it is not hardy so it was a real gamble planting it out, but it was the only option. If it makes it through the winter it really will be a surprise. I keep waiting for it to turn black and die, but so far......so good! It is very cheerful and lush with the lovely green against the bright yellow flowers, not at all like our native broom which is a very prickly and scrubby looking thing!

What else?

See who else is growing Betula Utilis 'Jacquemontii'.

See who else has plants in genus Betula.
