Robin Hoods Bay - North Yorks.

Robin Hoods Bay - North Yorks.

This tranquil scene belies its grim past.A smugglers cove some houses still have underground tunnels through which contraband was passed via trapdoors.

Wasnt always this way Jasmine used to excavate shale from cliffs to make alum powder, this was used to make dyes in clothing colour fast.In order to set the powder uric acid was used gallons of it - so ships returned laden with barrels of urine. Talk about taking the pee...!

Thank you - love the way nature has reclaimed this .Looks natural now though cliff faces re-arranged by man.Factories on top hundreds of people winding their way up and down , in the bay foreground you can see where ships came in .Once loaded had to wait for high tide then be manually turned to set sail. When tide right out can still see cart lines that were chiselled out of rock to smooth loading - sorry just love this place and the history adds to it .End of lesson.

I have some early rellys from Kent who were possibly involved in smuggling, lots went on in that area too.

Appart from gardening, local history is another interest of mine. Sometimes when I see a place or view it seems difficult to imagine what it was like in the past. It's a good job these facts are handed down the generations.

Very lucky to live where I do,many take the area for granted esp those who not lived anywhere else .This area would have been regarded as totally remote prior to railways and some of the customs range from bizarre to truly gruesome.
